Happy New Year dear reader and welcome back to my blog! 2020 was a tough one for many due to the ongoing COVID pandemic but thank God for another opportunity to live, to make ourselves better, and to make our world a better place.

At the beginning of each year, people make resolutions on various aspects of their lives they hope to improve; relationships, jobs, spirituality, etc. Quite unfortunately, health or healthy living does not make it to the priority list or resolution board in many instances. In this new year,2021, this must change. Halleluyah! 🙏🏾.

Dear reader, as you resolve among other things to be a better person, let your health be a priority. Resolve to live healthily and to take better care of your health.

Health

The Longman English dictionary defines health as “the state of having no illness or disease”. ( true daughter of Non-formal educator never abandons her Longman da🤣). Another defines it as being free from illness or injury. The World Health Organization however defines health as “the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.

How to Make Health a priority

First take stock of your physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Today, many people around the world are stressed physically and mentally. Others are battling obesity with its associated increased risk of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and heart diseases. This year, assess all these aspects of your health and take action. No “abaa ba s3 biaaa”🤣. Full action nkotiiii. Are you among the very few who resolve to take care of their health in January and by June, they are nowhere near starting?

2021 dierrrr, make it happen. Get help because you can’t do it alone in many instances. In a previous article, I explain how you can be consistent with an exercise plan. Check https://hectoriaawekeya.com/keep-moving/ for more. Contact a dietician/ nutritionist in any government hospital near you to help you plan a healthy diet using exactly what you eat so it’s sustainable. Are you underweight and seeking to gain weight? Do it the healthy way. Don’t feed on junk but rather aim for healthy weight gain. A dietician will do you good as well.

If it has been over a year since you had a medical checkup, why don’t you make that a priority this January?  It’s interesting when people brag that they cannot remember the last time they went to the hospital. Really? 🤨Make an appointment, get yourself checked (weight, height, blood pressure, sugar level, BMI, prostate, breast and pap smear etc). There is a lot to know about yourself.

Evaluate your mental health. To err is human, to forgive, divine. Brooding over past hurts and keeping malice makes you develop stress and puts you at risk of developing Hypertension. PLEASE, let it go. Seek help if you can’t forgive on your own. Make an appointment with a clinical psychologist in any regional or teaching hospital near you.  Talk to your priest or pastor if you may, and get the help you need to forgive. “To err is human,  to forgive,  divine”. Why am I preaching oo😅?

While keeping good mental health, the role of social wellbeing can not be over-emphasized. No man is an island. Perhaps, you’ve had fallouts with friends and family making you feel all alone sometimes. Swallow your pride and make some connections. We are social beings, we need people and people need us if we are to remain sane. Do what you can to mend bridges but don’t sacrifice your sanity.

You don’t like your job😫, it’s stressing you, and each morning, while you dress to go to work, something in you cringes but you are still there transferring the anger to your customers😰. Helllllo!. If you don’t like your job, get a new skill, and leave the job that you hate so much so you can have some peace of mind. Remember “If nothing changes, nothing will”.😊

On this note, welcome to 2021 where possibilities abound and opportunities are endless🥳. Take it one day at a time and may God send His angels🧚🏾‍♂️to bear us up in all our ways.

COVID is still a threat, Mask up😷 and wash your hands frequently.

Until I come your way again, cheers to “my year of good health”💪🏾

XoXo
